The Wide and natural splay revolution.

Just because you’re a sucker for punishment, doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be comfortable. You love pushing yourself to the limit and you know pain or stiffness can just be part of the deal. But you also want to give your body the best equipment to keep you comfortable and care for your foot health.

For a growing number of runners, maximum comfort on tarmac or trail means giving toes enough room to do their thing. Wide, natural splay, foot-shaped; call it what you will, there’s a massive movement toward running shoes with a wider toebox that allow your forefoot and toes to spread as nature intended them to. This not only increases comfort but improves balance and alignment too.

At SOLE we’re here to provide you with affordable, customizable support, no matter your particular preference in running shoe. Our new Active Wide footbeds and Performance Wide Footbeds have a wider toebox designed to fit seamlessly in wide and natural-splay footwear. This means you can get all the benefits of an industry-leading supportive insole at the same time as giving your toes the breathing room they need (try them for 15% off!).

Improving the way your toes and forefoot feel shouldn’t mean sacrificing comfort in the rest of your foot.

The benefits of SOLE insoles for wide running shoes.

Improving the way your toes and forefoot feel shouldn’t mean sacrificing comfort in the rest of your foot. SOLE Active Wide and Performance Wide footbeds boast the industry-leading support of the SOLE signature shape. This combines a zero-drop design with a deep heel cup and a supportive yet flexible arch, to help your feet bear the load of the strain you put them through while running.

The insoles' dynamic support is achieved through a density-mapped construction that allows your foot to flex in its natural motion while still reducing plantar fascia strain by up to a third. Clinical studies by The Running Injury Clinic have shown SOLE footbeds to interfere with the foot’s natural motion less than competitor products, while still reducing arch strain more than the same competitors.

In short, if you’re looking to take more of a minimalist approach to your running, but suffer from plantar fasciitis or other orthopedic or alignment ailments, a SOLE Wide footbed is the perfect wide running insole for you.

Both the Active Wide and Performance Wide come in a full size range, so you can get the right size to fit your footwear. The wide toebox fits seamlessly in the likes of Altra running shoes, but it's also possible to trim down to size for a wider shoe that's not quite as exaggerated in its shape.

A few favorites from our selection of Wide running insoles.

Active Wide vs. Performance Wide insoles for running.

The Active Wide is made on a density-mapped EVA base and comes in three thicknesses: Thin, Medium and Thick. The Active Wide Thin has no foam cushioning and is best suited for slim-fitting or low volume wide running shoes. The Active Wide Medium has 1,6 mm of cushioning Softec foam, and is best used in regular volume wide running shoes. The Active Wide Thick has 3,2 mm of Softec cushioning foam and is best used in wide or natural splay running shoes with a bit more wiggle room. The EVA base is incredibly durable and offers slightly firmer arch support.

The Performance Wide is made from used wine corks, collected and recycled through our wine cork recycling program ReCORK. This material is incredibly eco-friendly (it's completely carbon negative), offers superior insulation and molds particularly well to your feet. For now, the Performance Wide is available in only the medium thickness, with 1,6mm of Softec cushioning foam, with thin and thick versions in the pipeline.
