What is ReCORK? About North America's largest wine cork recycling program.

Posted on

ReCORK is a natural wine cork recycling program. Sounds simple enough, right? That's because it is. We run a no-hassle system for turning an everyday product (or every other day, maybe just on the weekends) into eco-friendly alternatives to petroleum-based synthetic foams and plastics. But without people participating to make it work, a system is just a a set of inter-connected steps. That's why ReCORK is much more than just a system. We're an alliance of businesses and individuals from every corner of North America, working together to create meaningful change for the sake of the planet and the people who live on it.

At ReCORK we place our faith in two things: firstly, a simple material with massive potential, and secondly, the power of community.

The challenges of climate change and the threats faced by our planet are numerous and complicated. We don't pretend to have all the answers, but sometimes the combined effort of many people taking small, simple steps can help tackle big complex problems. At ReCORK we place our faith in two things: firstly, a simple material with massive potential, and secondly the power of community. Cork is one of the most sustainable materials known to man (read more about the wonders of cork). The more we use it, the better the impact on our environment. At ReCORK we believe that too much potential is wasted when natural wine corks end up in landfills. That's why we created North America's largest natural cork recycling program. With the help of our network of over 3000 collection partners across the continent, we've collected more than 100 million wine corks for recycling to date. Cork is an incredibly versatile material and we've put thousands of hours of research into finding the very best ways to maximize cork's potential as a raw material. This has allowed us to use the corks we remove from the waste stream to replace environmentally-harmful petroleum-based materials in a variety of consumer products.

The more people turn to sustainable alternatives in production, the better-off our planet will be. We believe that with easy access to the right information, consumers will make better, more informed choices that make a positive impact on the environment. That's why we created CORKwatch, our database of wineries and brands that use natural cork stoppers.

Environmental consciousness is at the heart of our operations. That's why we take steps to reduce our carbon footprint beyond being carbon-neutral, to the point of being carbon-negative. Planting trees and using UPS's carbon offsetting program are just two parts of how we ensure this priority. Our program is ever-growing and as we expand we'll continue to ensure our impact on the environment is a positive one. We've just scratched the surface of the potential in recycled cork, and we want your help! There are billions more corks that we could recycle every year. Take a look at our recycling partner models, and get involved to make a meaningful impact today.
