Supination: what foot supination is and how to correct it with supportive insoles.
Wearing supportive insoles can help prevent supination to ensure neutral alignment and protect the body from injury.
What is supination?
Supination occurs when your weight rolls onto the outer edges of your feet as you take a step. In a normal step, your foot should roll inward a small amount (pronate) so that your weight is on the ball of your foot, allowing you to push off from your big toe.
When you supinate, the ankle rolls outward, causing extra stress on the foot and ankle. Supination is commonly a result of genetics but can also be triggered or worsened by muscle imbalances in the foot, ankle and lower leg.
Why is supination a problem?
The body is a complex interlinked system that starts at the feet. When your ankle rolls outward you put stress on vulnerable parts of your feet and ankles. This can also have far more far-reaching adverse affects. If the mechanics of your feet are a little bit off, it can throw off the alignment of your entire body.
Excessive supination can cause ankle pain, plantar fasciitis and stress higher up the body. This can lead to knee pain, hip pain and even back pain. The negative effects of supination can be particularly severe for runners who put their lower limbs through repetitive strain.
How to correct supination.
Supination can be corrected with orthopedic insoles that help prevent your foot from rolling outward. Insoles support your feet from beneath and promote a natural, equal distribution of pressure across your foot. To correct supination it is important to use an insole with lateral support, or support that runs down the outside of your foot.
Proper support from insoles helps ensure that the complex machinery of your feet and ankles are working at optimum efficiency. This stable base helps prevent alignment issues in your lower legs and beyond, as far as your knees, hip and spine.

Reviews of SOLE insoles for supination.
"I have had several pairs of prescription orthotics that run more than $400 a pair. But I keep reaching for the SOLE footbeds I bought here. I even took the SOLEs to the Doctor to see if they could make the arch in their orthotics like the SOLEs. No luck. The SOLEs still felt better than the expensive custom ones. The deep heel cup keeps my ankle more stable than anything I have ever tried. I'm buying another pair. No more custom orthotics for me." - Judy S.
